period shorts

First came period pants, promising to save both pennies and the planet while making pads a thing of the past. Now, there's another addition to the menstrual market. Presenting period activewear: shorts and leggings with built-in protection to keep you moving through your cycle.

In a UK-wide poll of 2,000 women conducted by Populus, 54% of participants said they stopped exercising due to their menstrual cycle, while a worrying study by Adidas revealed that one in four teenage girls drop out of sports, citing worries about period leakage as the main reason. That shouldn’t have to be the case.

Happily, more and more brands, including the likes of Modibodi and Adidas, are branching out into the world of period-proof activewear, meaning no more sacking off the gym when Aunt Flo comes knocking (unless you want to, that is). It’s easy to see the appeal, but does it actually work?

The Women’s Health Lab team set aside their usual gym attire and pulled on these new-gen garments while on their flow to find out. Here are their top picks:

What is period activewear?

The best period leggings and shorts look just like regular activewear at first glance, but these high-tech designs are made from seamless, sweat-wicking fabric and feature an absorbent gusset or integrated period pants to absorb blood, prevent leaks and neutralise odours. They’re uber subtle, with no obvious bulk or padding — from the outside, you’d be none the wiser.

Capable of holding anywhere between one to five tampons’ worth of blood, some styles prevent the need for any sort of protection entirely (don't stress, we've tested these thoroughly), while others are designed to be worn alongside sanitary products.

How to wash period leggings and shorts

You’ll be pleased to know that period activewear isn’t particularly high maintenance. Simply rinse after use, then add to a wash and you’re good to wear it again and again.

Most brands recommend mixing them in with a dark wash on a 30℃ to 40℃ cycle, but check the instructions on the product first.

Hot tip: Steer clear of fabric softener as this can affect the absorbency levels, and put your leggings or shorts into a delicates bag to help them last longer.

It is okay to exercise during your period?

Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist for Boots UK no less, reckons there’s no physical reason why working out should be off the cards during your TOTM. In fact, it could help alleviate symptoms.

'It can be tempting to take time off from exercise during your period, but it offers huge physical and mental benefits,' she says. 'Studies suggest it reduces the amount of prostaglandin, the hormone responsible for inflammation and uterine cramps, in the lining of your womb.

'It also produces endorphins, particularly during aerobic exercise, which block pain receptors and can help reduce the sensation of cramps.'

Of course, it’s important to listen to your body, she adds. If you’re feeling bloated, crampy and sapped of energy, there’s absolutely no shame in burying yourself under blankets on the sofa. However, if you do feel like rolling out your yoga mat or hitting up the gym, then go for it!

Ultimately, it’s about making exercise work for your menstrual cycle. 'Hormones fluctuate, meaning certain exercises could suit different stages,' explains Nevinson. 'Due to a potential slump in energy during menstruation, low-intensity aerobic exercises such as swimming, yoga strength training and light cardio could be easier on the body than endurance activities like cardio and HIIT.'

If you regularly experience menstrual cramps and are concerned about your periods, do consult your pharmacist or GP.

Women's Health Lab approved

Our panel put period-proof leggings and shorts from leading brands through a range of workouts over the course of their period to see how they coped with both sweaty and non-sweaty activities.

They rated the period activewear on design, comfort and performance, including how easy they were to get on and off, how the material felt against their skin and, crucially, how well they protected against leaks. They also considered how active and free they felt while wearing them and how easy they were to wash.

In the Women’s Health Lab, our experts measured how much liquid each pair was able to hold, timed how long it took to be fully absorbed and measured surface wetness post-absorption. They also noted if any shrinkage occurred after washing.

Modibodi Recycled Running Shorts

Modibodi Recycled Running Shorts
£32 at modibodi.co.uk
Pros
  • Made from 78% recycled materials
  • Lightweight, soft material
  • Easy to clean
  • Secure pocket
  • Suitable for high- and low-impact exericse
Cons

These chic shorts from OG period brand Modibodi offer all the functionality of your fave running shorts – they're lightweight, breathable and feature three pockets (hallelujah!) – without the fear of leaving a trail of blood as you pound the pavement. Our panel was hella impressed, with NO leaks or unwanted odours reported, even on heavy flow days. Not working out? They’re so comfy, you’ll want to slip them on anyway. 'I’d recommend them to absolutely everyone,' said one satisfied tester. High praise, indeed!

The WH Lab verdict: Due to a thicker pad, there’s no need for protection here — just pull them on and you’re good to go. We would have liked a longer absorbency area for maximum security during lying down exercises, and some panellists found them a tad short and loose around the legs, but that’s down to personal preference. Overall, they're an impressive bit of kit.

Adidas Techfit Period Proof Bike Short Leggings

Adidas Techfit Period Proof Bike Short Leggings
    Pros
    • Made from 73% recycled materials
    • VPL-free
    • Flattering fit for all body shapes
    • Suitable for high- and low-impact workouts
    • High compression
    Cons

We’re big fans of Adidas here at WH, so we had high hopes when the brand announced its foray into period-proof activewear. Fortunately, these bike shorts didn’t disappoint. From sweaty HIIT classes to heavy leg sessions, they were a dream to train in thanks to the breathable, compressive fabric — it allowed us to move freely but didn’t ride up or fall down. Our testers raved about the flattering, VPL-free fit, which hugged their curves in all the right places, and they appreciated the longer length for extra coverage.

The WH Lab verdict: A reliable choice for light flow days, these shorts are designed to be worn with a tampon, pad or cup for an added layer of protection. Just note that the waistband is on the tighter side and there’s no built-in pocket for stashing your bits and bobs.

Adidas Techfit Period Proof 7/8 Leggings
      Pros
      • Made from 85% recycled materials
      • Power-mesh pocket
      • VPL-free seamless design
      • Breathable, sweat-wicking material
      • Flexible material for ease of movement
      Cons

If you’d rather opt for leggings over shorts, consider this glossy pair from our pals at Adidas. Our testers rated them highly, commenting on the 'high-quality material' and 'super soft feel'. The built-in brief was super discreet – no broadcasting being on your period to your treadmill neighbour – and didn’t feel bulky, allowing us to move freely. They held their own through everything from yoga to netball, and even stayed in place as we tackled burpees.

The WH Lab verdict: Like the shorts above, these are intended to be worn with a tampon, pad or cup for an additional layer of security or towards the end of your period. We’d save them for the cooler months as the fabric is on the thicker side.

        Pantys Runner Shorts

        UK Lab(HBZ,WH,MH)
        Pantys Runner Shorts
        Pros
        • 100% carbon compensated
        • Easy to wash and fast-drying
        • Soft, lightweight fabric
        • Seamless design
        • Stylish design
        Cons

If sustainability is a top priority, put certified B Corp brand Pantys on your radar. Its stuff is made from biodegradable materials and each product comes in a cardboard box detailing its carbon footprint. Our testers loved the retro look of these shorts and heaped praise on the lightweight, silky soft fabric and lack of VPL. The loose-fit design and short length wasn’t for everyone, however, with some feeling too ‘on show’ for activities that required lots of movement.

The WH Lab verdict: Here's a worthy contender for relaxed runs during your TOTM. For a medium flow, there’s no need for a pad or tampon with these bad boys, but the waistband is rather snug, so size up for maximum comfort – once the fit is right, they’re a dream.

          Wuka Period Leggings

          Wuka Period Leggings
          Pros
          • Made from recycled polyester
          • Excellent body-shaping credentials
          • Comfortable, high-quality fabric
          • Squat-proof
          • Great for yoga, Pilates and walking
          Cons

If you're after a pair of leggings for gentle yoga flows or stretch sessions to help ease those annoying period pains, look no further. This sleek black style from the experts at WUKA grabbed our attention for its soft, cosy fabric and body sculpting creds. 'They were really flattering around my legs and bum,' declared one enthusiastic tester. Our panel found them best for a lighter flow — they felt soaked through with sweat after a high-intensity session, which wouldn't be the one when coupled with a heavier period. The built-in pants required regular readjusting during more dynamic activities, too.

The WH Lab verdict: If you like to keep your workouts low-key during your monthly bleed, there’s very little not to like about these leggings. Comfy, flattering and squat-proof, they're absorbent enough for the start or end of a period and are a doddle to wash — just give them a quick rise and bung them in the machine with your delicates.
