These are the 12 best organic wines to buy, according to our panel of testers

Here's to your summer sipping

best organic wine

From your weekly veg box to your beauty regime, it’s never been easier to buy into a fully organic shop, if that's something that matters to you. While the organic versus non-organic debate is complex, know that, with the bottles in WH's round-up starting from £8.50, the former doesn't have to be a super pricey option.

How we test organic wines

At the Women’s Health Lab, our panel of 10 testers swapped their smoothies for a selection of red, white, rosé and sparkling organic wines. They were looking for the best-tasting bottles that wouldn't break the bank, and these 12 came out on top:

1
Best organic red wine

Paul Jaboulet Aîné 'Parallele 45' Côtes du Rhône Rouge

Paul Jaboulet Aîné 'Parallele 45' Côtes du Rhône Rouge
£13 at Majestic Wines

For those that like their wine rich and spicy, look no further. This certified organic red Côtes du Rhône leads with red jammy fruit and couldn’t be smoother.

2
Best organic white wine

Selfridges Selection Organic Vegan White Wine

Selfridges Selection Organic Vegan White Wine

A match made in heaven with tuna steak, our top-rated organic white wine is from sunny Spain. Elegant and fruity — serve well chilled and enjoy notes of honeysuckle, apples and stone fruit.

Runner-up organic red wine

The Hedonist Ecology Grenache Organic Wine

The Hedonist Ecology Grenache Organic Wine

Made in a certified biodynamic vineyard (the ultimate mark of approval in natural winemaking, meaning the vineyard employs 100% organic practices), this is an intense grenache from Australia’s well-respected Hedonist estate.

The aroma is full of tart black cherry and cocoa complexity, which develops on the palate with white pepper and cardamom spicing. At 14% ABV, it packs a punch, so you might want to limit yourself to one glass with dinner.

Best organic rosé

Château Miraval Rosé

Château Miraval Rosé

The latest release from Brad and Angelina’s French estate wowed in our taste test; pale pink in the glass, it’s crisp and acidic, with bags of citrus, green apple and fresh herb flavour. The perfect summer sipper, and 100% organic, too.

5
Runner-up organic rosé

Mas de Longchamp Rosé Alpilles

Mas de Longchamp Rosé Alpilles

If you like your rosé with plenty of red fruit character, this is the summer blush for you.

It’s high in acidity, meaning it would work equally well as an aperitif or with lighter dishes like vongole or caprese salad. And at £11, it’s going to be our fridge staple for a long, hot summer (fingers crossed!).

6
Best organic English sparkling wine

Oxney Non Vintage Sparkling Wine

Oxney Non Vintage Sparkling Wine

Perfect for staycations and celebrating, this homegrown fizz is completely organic. Although non-vintage (meaning it’s made with a blend of grapes taken from various years), it’s full of expensive-tasting notes of brioche, red apple and a fruity blend of passionfruit, peach and mango.

Runner-up organic English sparkling wine

Limney Estate Sparkling Wine

Limney Estate Sparkling Wine

Created with a blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meuniere (from Soil Association-certified vineyards), this English sparkler is honey-sweet with a bright floral backbone for balance.

Our testers felt it could stand up to big name (and big price tag) champagnes, which is testament to its quality and complexity.

8
Best for a taste of holiday

Purato Siccari Appassimento

Purato Siccari Appassimento

This is the kind of red we’d sink while on holiday — and it’s the next best thing to a lazy afternoon spent in the Sicilian sunshine.

Team with simply cooked steak or tomato-based pasta to bring out the rich raisin and cherry notes.

9
Best organic cabernet sauvignon

Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon

Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon

Red wines like cabernet sauvignon have high levels of antioxidants, making them a relatively healthy choice, if you are going to drink booze in moderation.

Add to that the fact Bonterra’s Californian grapes are completely organic, and bursting with black fruit, and we’d say it’s a pretty dreamy pairing with steak for your next date night.

Best organic wine by the case

Bel Campo Organic Fiano

Bel Campo Organic Fiano

It’s easy to stick to your old tried and tested white wine, but this organic fiano is a great easy-drinking alternative, when you’re in the mood for something new.

Available by the case, it’s fresh, with notes of citrus, stone fruit and nuts; and is a great match with roast chicken.

11
Best organic pecorino

Saladini Pilastri Pecorino

Saladini Pilastri Pecorino

After Spain, Italy has the most organic vineyards of any country in the world, so it’s little surprise we’re featuring another grape from this part of the world.

You’ll notice this pecorino is fruity, with notes of white peach, apple and melon, along with more of a creamy, savoury touch that makes you go back for another glass. As one of the first organic winemakers in Italy, it’s clear Saladini Pilastri knows what it’s doing.

12
Best organic chardonnay

Emiliana O Organic Chardonnay

Emiliana O Organic Chardonnay

A fine example of an un-oaked chardonnay from a well-respected sustainable and vegan-friendly organic producer (with change from £10!).

As you’d expect from the warmer climate found in Chile, it’s all about the tropical fruit here — pineapple, grapefruit and peach — with a deliciously long finish that you won’t forget in a hurry.
