It is – or should I say was – the most innovative hair tool ever made. A world first hairstyler that defied curling conventions by delivering perfect waves and unrivalled shine without damaging your precious ends. Now, the famed Dyson Airwrap has had an even bigger upgrade.

Featuring new and reegineered attachments and, wait for it, a hairdryer add-on, this might be Dyson’s smartest styler yet. It will probably come as no surprise, then, that it sold out on the site days after launch; it’s gone viral on TikTok (Dyson Airwrap has over a billion views on the Gen-z favourite platform) and Dyson devotees are raving of the myriad styling benefits. Soft waves? Tight curls? Poker straight? You name it.

The good news is that it's now back in stock. What's even better? You can secure yourself a Dyson Airwrap courtesy of Ebay's Refurbished Hub for just £379.99 (£57 cheaper than other retailers). And for a short time, Ebay will be offering a further discount.

If you're thinking about making the investment, I’ve tried out every new attachment out for the first time over the course of three weeks – here are my honest thoughts.

But first: how does the Dyson Airwrap Multi-styler work?

Unlike standard curling irons, Dyson does things differently from the get-go. It combines a fast, high-pressure motor to power a phenomenon known as ‘the Coanda effect’; this effect occurs when, at the right pressure and speed, the airflow attracts and then gathers the hair around the barrel, curling your hair for you. This precise airflow reduces the use of extreme heat and keeps ends away from unnecessary damage. You can smooth, curl or blow-dry your hair without fearing those dreaded split ends.

What does the Dyson Airwrap Multistyler actually do?

The short answer? Everything. The scientists at Dyson have developed the new tool to cater to more hair types and styles. 'Most styling tools ignore that hair types are very different – what attachment may work for one, could be detrimental to another,' says entrepreneur James Dyson.

'The advancements in the Dyson AirwrapTM multi-styler build on the success of its predecessor, through relentless research, user trials and advancements in computational fluid dynamics,’

What makes it different from the original?

Increased speed, precision and the new smoothing dryer attachment are what really sets the new tool apart for me. You effectively get all the tools you need to style your hair in one handy case and can go from damp hair to perfect waves in minutes – plus, the shine you get from this hairdryer is nothing like I've ever seen.

‘Now, the tool does even more, allowing owners to personalise to suit their styling preferences, personalised for their hair type,' agrees Jen Atkin, Dyson Global Styling Ambassador. 'You can ensure every attachment in your box delivers your desired style, specific to your hair type.'

What happened when I tried the new attachments?

The Coanda smoothing dryer

I was first introduced to Dyson's hairdryer by my sister and couldn't get over the shine after a quick rough dry; to put it mildly, no hairdryer gives my hair shine quite like it. It gave my hair a healthy glow (not an easy feat with bleached blonde hair), tamed flyaway and quickly dried my hair from wet to damp, ready for styling in a flash.

Firm and soft brushes

Perfect for when I was in a hurry before heading into the office, I loved the soft brush attachment for a speedy blow-dry finish. It smoothed my hair (which is straight with a few kinks here and there) and added instant volume to my bangs. Smooth, straight and – as always– a shiny finish.

Airwrap barrels

The old Airwrap barrels had two separate add-ons to change the curl direction. Not this one, though. The newly upgraded tools direct airflow clockwise and anti-clockwise so you can switch the airflow direction as you style.

I will admit it took me multiple attempts to get the hang of the barrels, and self-wrapping my hair didn't come naturally. Five attempts, a failed reel video and countless TikTok videos later, and I worked it out. The trick is to keep your hair ever so slightly damp, part it into smaller sections starting at the back and ensure you're using the barrels in the right direction (anti-clockwise or clockwise).

Also, to get the hair to self-wrap in the barrel, I found the best trick was to hold a section of my hair at the middle and then place the barrel right at the ends to pick up the hair more easily.

Final thoughts

Yes, it took me a while to get the hang of the airwrap barrels and I would highly recommend a TikTok video or two before you attempt to curl (or film, in my case) your hair to get used to the airflow. That said, once I did my research, I was able to create that otherworldly shine and perfect waves that other tools can only dream of.
