When it comes to sports bras, you’ve got a lot of options. Whether it’s racerback, zip-front, or high-impact, a good, supportive bra is key for maximizing your training. Perhaps you prefer a minimalist approach and one double-duty piece of activewear. Say hello to long-line sports bras.
A long-line sports bra is a hybrid between a sports bra and a tank top, says Natalya Vasquez, CPT, a certified personal trainer, health coach, and founder of Bridal Bootcamp San Diego. “It has a built-in bra but extends beyond the rib cage to the mid-torso or waist and comes in a variety of styles like racerback, tank, halter, V-neck, and scoop neck.” Basically all activewear brands have a long-line sports bra or two, so you can shop them at Lululemon, Athleta, Amazon, Sweaty Betty, and more.

A long-line sports bra also provides more torso coverage than a traditional bra and is often worn in lieu of a sports bra and tank top combination, adds Vasquez. That means you can go from the gym to the grocery store without having to change or add additional layers, she adds. (Fewer pieces in your bag and in your laundry. Score!)

And while there’s nothing worse than your sports bra shifting while exercising, the additional fabric in a long-line sports bra actually prevents it from rolling up, says Vasquez. Plus, many long-line sports bras come with removable padding, which allows you to control the support level, she adds.
But, there are limitations to keep in mind. Many long-line bras are designed for low- to medium-impact activities like yoga, Pilates, walking, and some forms of resistance training, and may not offer enough support for high-impact activities like running, dancing, or kickboxing, especially if you wear a C cup or larger, says Vasquez. As a result, it’s crucial to find a long-line sports bra for your specific needs.
