Lead investigator in Karen Read murder trial suspended without pay
The lead investigator in the Karen Read murder trial has been suspended without pay after a duty status hearing on Monday.
Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor was relieved of duty and transferred out of Norfolk County District Attorney’s Detective Unit after a mistrial was declared on July 3.
During his testimony, Proctor was questioned about text messages he sent regarding the case and Read.
Proctor described his messages as “very regrettable.”
Read’s defense team is also asking that charges be dropped after hearing that jurors unanimously found Read not guilty of second-degree murder.
In an 11-page motion, Read’s lawyers stated that a juror contacted them, saying that the jury was only deadlocked on the vehicular manslaughter charge.
The defense argues that the judge should have asked the jury about each charge before declaring a mistrial.
