Majority ownership group to put NBA champion Celtics up for sale
Weeks after winning their 18th NBA championship, owners of the Boston Celtics are planning to make the franchise available for sale, the team has announced.
Celtics officials said in a news release that the ownership decided to sell the team for "estate and family planning considerations."
The sale of a majority interest of the franchise should be completed in 2024 or early 2025, with the full balance due in 2028, according to the Celtics. Team officials said Wyc Grousbeck will remain governor of the team until the sale of the franchise is completed in 2028.
The Celtics were last purchased in 2002, when a majority ownership group led by Grousbeck bought the team for $360 million.
Grousbeck was governor of the Celtics who won it all in 2008 and again in 2024.
The Celtics franchise is now valued at $4.7 billion, according to a 2023 estimate by Forbes.
