Person barricaded at Ocean Lakes Family Campground in custody, police say

An incident possibly involving weapons at a Grand Strand campground led to a person barricading themselves Sunday evening.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - An incident possibly involving weapons at a Grand Strand campground led to a person barricading themselves Sunday evening.

The Horry County Police Department said officers were at the scene within the Ocean Lakes Family Campground. The HCPD first posted information about the incident on its Facebook page at around 7:30 p.m. It’s unclear what the nature of the possible weapons incident was.

WMBF News Reporter Eric Richards was also at the scene and saw multiple Horry County police vehicles, including an armored one, arrive at the campground at around 8 p.m.

WMBF News Reporter Eric Richards took footage of Horry County police arriving at what was described as a weapons incident and barricaded person at Ocean Lakes.

The HCPD then said at around 8:30 p.m. that the incident now involved a barricaded person. The HCPD said multiple units, including members of its SWAT, drone, negotiations, bomb squad and dog teams were also at the scene.

At around 9:45 p.m., an Horry County spokesperson confirmed the person barricaded was taken into custody. It’s unclear how the arrest happened, but the spokesperson said no gunshots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The barricaded person, who was not immediately identified, was being checked out by EMS as a precaution.

In a statement, Ocean Lakes Family Campground thanked its staff and first responders “for working to keep everyone safe and address the situation.”

Crews from Horry County Fire Rescue were also seen in the area.
