Reds' Elly De La Cruz named to 2024 MLB All-Star Game
The Reds' Elly De La Cruz has been named to the National League's team for the All-Star Game on July 16.
He will be the Reds' sole representative this year.
Ever since joining the team in 2023, De La Cruz has been a star player for the Reds. This season in particular he recently has made headlines for his unrivaled base-stealing record in the MLB, a stat in which he leads league-wide.
De La Cruz will be playing his usual position of shortstop, in which he will attempt to help the National League team win for the second straight year in a row. Prior to their win in 2023, the National League team had not won a game against the American League team in 11 years.
The Cincinnati Reds are currently ranked fourth of the five different teams in their division, the National League Central, with a win percentage of 46.7%.
The current leader in the National League as a whole is the Philadelphia Phillies, with a 64.4% win percentage.
The Phillies also lead the MLB for the most amount of players who will be represented in next week's game, managing to score seven different player spots in total on the National League team.
De La Cruz is a native of the Dominican Republic, and played for various Reds minor league teams for five years before making his MLB debut in 2023.
De La Cruz, at just 22, will also be the youngest player named to the All-Star game for the Reds since Johnny Bench made the National League team in 1969 at age 21.
The game will occur at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (7 p.m. local time) on July 16.
