Ohio ranks top 5 in Olympic gold medals won by state
We are just over four weeks away from the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics, held this year in Paris.
Dating back to the 1996 Olympics, held in Atlanta, Ga., the United States has won the overall medal count in every game and has won the most golds in every game except one (2008, when the game's host, China, took the top spot most often).
That stretch of dominance has skyrocketed the U.S. to the most won gold medals in modern Olympics history: 2,635.
It's a streak the U.S. will look to continue this year, and it's a legacy that the state of Ohio has a strong role in.
According to The Sports Geek, the Buckeye State has won 44 individual gold medals, the third most of any other state, since the first modern Olympiad in 1896.
Ohio is also one of just four states to have won 40 or more individual gold medals.
Among the most decorated Ohioans are gymnast Simone Biles (Columbus), swimmer Gary Hall Jr. (Cincinnati) and swimmer Charles Daniels (Dayton), who won the U.S.'s first-ever gold medal in swimming in the 1904 St. Louis games.
California leads the way, with 127, followed by New York (70), Ohio and Illinois (40).
Texas (34) rounds out the top five.
As for the rest of the tri-state area, Indiana has won 13 individual golds while Kentucky has brought home just three.
