Editorial: Historic Bengals season ignites community, businesses around Cincinnati
What a magical season — our community was literally painted in orange during the Cincinnati Bengals march to the Super Bowl. While we didn't win the game, you wouldn't know that by how fans embraced the moment. Who Dey Nation by the hundreds waited hours in single-digit temperatures to greet the players when they returned from California. Now, it's not easy finding a silver lining in a defeat. However, our community is shining brightly thanks to the Bengals. We had the pleasure of sharing with you so many inspiring stories during the playoff run. Take for example the story of Superman Sammy, the 3-year-old boy waiting for a heart transplant. The Bengals winning season and trip to the Super Bowl gave Sammy something to look forward to while in the hospital. Then there's Adam Wilson and his daughter Avery. The Bengals success already made their tight bond even tighter. Adam has ALS, but that didn't stop him from sharing his love for the Bengals with his daughter. We saw businesses, that normally would be all but dormant in winter, have record-breaking sales. School children from around the tri-state showed their Bengals pride. Some even learned the Ickey Shuffle from the Bengals great himself. Greater Cincinnati celebrated a magical moment of unity even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Football may be just a game, but it serves the greater purpose of bringing people together when sometimes we seem so far apart. So let's continue this joy every time you greet your family, friends or a stranger with a hearty " Who Dey." Thank you to the Brown family, the players and coaches for a season we will never forget. The future for the Bengals is bright — the potential for Greater Cincinnati is endless.
