From CRC to Club 513: Local rec centers offers safe, fun place for teens to bond
During summer break, 16-year-old Daniel Griffin works at the Hirsch Recreation Center so he can build relationships with others in the Cincinnati community.
"I feel like that's what we need, a bond. It helps the kids a lot. A bond," Daniel said.
Without those connections, Daniel knows how easy it is for teens to end up in trouble or on the streets.
He is encouraging others to take advantage of what the Cincinnati Recreation Commission is offering every Saturday night during the summer for kids ages 12 through 17.
This Saturday at Hirsch, the gym is being transformed into Club 513.
"This entire space will be changed over to a nightclub for these kids," said Chris Pike, spokesperson for CRC.
There will be a DJ and a 360 photo booth.
The pool party outside will last beyond sundown and won't close until 11.
"It takes me back, like, to the 90s. Like, my mom and dad, where they are all outside playing. It takes you back to that," Daniel said.
If you want to go back to the 70s, teens can enjoy the blacklights or chill rooms.
Food trucks will provide dinner at no cost to the kids.
"On the lower level, we have several break-out rooms. This first room will be configured for an esthetician and hair-braiding," Pike said. "In here, a barber is giving haircuts all night long."
The "Rec at Nite" programs are held at two locations, including the Hirsch Rec Center in Avondale and the Lincoln Rec Center in the West End.
There is no need to preregister and it is all free.
