WJCL Editorial: Savannah needs solutions to its shooting problem

A message from WJCL President and General Manager Ben Hart

I’m looking for solutions this week. A shootout in one of Savannah’s most popular tourist areas left 11 people injured. And it is not a good look.I think Savannah has been lucky compared to other places when it comes to violence. When people visit, they typically feel safe. They don’t have their heads on a swivel like you might in Atlanta, Miami or New Orleans. But 2 weeks ago, the mayor says two groups with guns opened fire on each other in the middle of Ellis Square after a social media argument.Incredibly idiotic. Now the question is, what do we do to stop this from happening again?Well I’m a history buff, and I can tell you small towns have had problems like this before. You might remember the story of Tombstone Ariz.In 1881, Wyatt Earp and his brothers tried to write and enforce an ordinance to stop gun violence by banning most folks from having a gun or even a bowie knife in town.Let’s just say, with uneven enforcement, that did not work out. But now I think there’s a better solution.Let’s all agree to allow everyone to have one, except idiots and kids. If idiots and kids don’t have the guns, it’s safe to say no one else will do immature or stupid things with them. Savannah could become the perfect place for responsible gun owners who love their community. Can we agree on this?If you are buying a gun with an intention to fight with it or attack people, you are probably an idiot. If you are following the law, it’s always a last resort.I’m Ben Hart. Thank you for sharing this time.

I’m looking for solutions this week.

A shootout in one of Savannah’s most popular tourist areas left 11 people injured.

And it is not a good look.

I think Savannah has been lucky compared to other places when it comes to violence.

When people visit, they typically feel safe.

They don’t have their heads on a swivel like you might in Atlanta, Miami or New Orleans.

But 2 weeks ago, the mayor says two groups with guns opened fire on each other in the middle of Ellis Square after a social media argument.

Incredibly idiotic.

Now the question is, what do we do to stop this from happening again?

Well I’m a history buff, and I can tell you small towns have had problems like this before.

You might remember the story of Tombstone Ariz.

In 1881, Wyatt Earp and his brothers tried to write and enforce an ordinance to stop gun violence by banning most folks from having a gun or even a bowie knife in town.

Let’s just say, with uneven enforcement, that did not work out.

But now I think there’s a better solution.

Let’s all agree to allow everyone to have one, except idiots and kids.

Savannah could become the perfect place for responsible gun owners who love their community.

Can we agree on this?

If you are buying a gun with an intention to fight with it or attack people, you are probably an idiot.

If you are following the law, it’s always a last resort.
