WJCL Editorial: Keeping kids away from guns

A message from WJCL President and General Manager Ben Hart

I’m gonna start this week with something controversial. GunsNow let’s try something not so controversial. Keeping kids safe. This week on Hilton Head, someone shot two kids who were partying on Coligny Beach. A high school spring break party with kids being kids. And as you might expect, partying turned into irresponsible actions. It was just a few weeks ago that we got video from our neighbors in Florida. Another group of young people on the beach when one teenage boy produces a gun. Police body cam showed us the chaos from that 16 year old. This is insane. We are bombarded with images of how irresponsible teenagers are.But this month lawmakers in South Carolina have decided to lift more restrictions on guns. What are we aiming for here?Right now, Georgia law says you must be 18 years old to possess a gun or a rifle.Federal law says you need to be 21 years old to legally buy one.But in South Carolina there is no minimum age for a person to possess a rifle or shotgun.Instead of looking for ways to lift more restrictions, I think we should be looking for ways to hold adults and parents more accountable. You might remember, in Michigan, after a teenager opened fire killing several students at his school, a jury just convicted his mom and dad of manslaughter for letting him have the gun.Let’s face it. Kids are basically irresponsible, unbalanced and ignorant because of their life experience. If we want to change gun laws, let’s keep kids from carrying them around.I’m Ben Hart. Thank you for sharing this time.

I’m gonna start this week with something controversial. Guns

Now let’s try something not so controversial.

We are bombarded with images of how irresponsible teenagers are.

But this month lawmakers in South Carolina have decided to lift more restrictions on guns.

What are we aiming for here?

Right now, Georgia law says you must be 18 years old to possess a gun or a rifle.

Federal law says you need to be 21 years old to legally buy one.

But in South Carolina there is no minimum age for a person to possess a rifle or shotgun.

Instead of looking for ways to lift more restrictions, I think we should be looking for ways to hold adults and parents more accountable.

You might remember, in Michigan, after a teenager opened fire killing several students at his school, a jury just convicted his mom and dad of manslaughter for letting him have the gun.

Let’s face it. Kids are basically irresponsible, unbalanced and ignorant because of their life experience.

If we want to change gun laws, let’s keep kids from carrying them around.

I’m Ben Hart. Thank you for sharing this time.
