AS WJCL 22 NEWS' LYDIA BLACKSTONE EXPLAINS ...IT'S PART OF AN EFFORT TO TEACH KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF POLICE WORK...AND WHAT IT TAKES TO KEEP THE CITY SAFE. THIS MORNING, A NEW POLICE CHIEF GOT SWORN IN HERE IN BLUFFTON, BUT SHE'S A LITTLE YOUNGER THAN SOME MIGHT EXPECT. "I'M IN 1ST GRADE." ((MILA WENZEL, BLUFFTON POLICE CHIEF FOR A DAY)) BUT TODAY MILA WENZEL IS THE BLUFFTON POLICE CHIEF. "THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE IT GIVES ME A DAY OFF AND I THINK SHE'S GOING TO DO A GREAT JOB." ((CHIEF JOE BABKIEWICZ, BLUFFTON POLICE CHIEF)) IT'S THE SECOND YEAR THE BLUFFTON POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS SWORN IN A CHILD TO BE THE CHIEF FOR THE DAY', CHIEF BABKIEWICZ SAYS IT'S ALL TO HELP CHILDREN CREATE RELATIONSHIPS AND TRUST WITH THE PEOPLE PROTECTING THEM DAY IN AND DAY OUT. "IT'S JUST A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET KIDS INTO THE DEPARTMENT AND TO SEE HE POLICE OFFICERS IN A DIFFERENT LIMELIGHT AND FOR THEM TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FUN, TOO." "SHE'S GETTING A POLICE ESCORT TO SCHOOL. WE WILL BE BRINGING HER LUNCH. SEVERAL OFFICERS WILL BE MEETING WITH HER TO DISCUSS SOME VERY IMPORTANT ISSUES." In an effort to teach kids the important work that goes into keeping them safe, the Bluffton Police Department swore in a first grader Monday as their new chief: Mila Wenzel from St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.It’s the second year the Bluffton Police Department has sworn in a child to be the "Chief for the Day."Chief Joe Babkiewicz says it’s all to help children create relationships and trust with the people protecting them day in and day out.“This is great because it gives me a day off, and I think she’s going to do a great job,” said Babkiewicz Mila's brother, Hudson, was named assistant chief. “It's just a great opportunity to get kids into the department and to see the police officers in a different limelight and for them to have a little bit of fun, too,” said Babkiewicz. On Monday morning, Bluffton Mayor Larry Toomer swore both children in before the kids headed to school.“She's getting a police escort to school. We will be bringing her lunch.
