In an effort to teach kids the important work that goes into keeping them safe, the Bluffton Police Department swore in a first grader Monday as their new chief: Mila Wenzel from St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.
It’s the second year the Bluffton Police Department has sworn in a child to be the "Chief for the Day."
Chief Joe Babkiewicz says it’s all to help children create relationships and trust with the people protecting them day in and day out.
“This is great because it gives me a day off, and I think she’s going to do a great job,” said Babkiewicz
Mila's brother, Hudson, was named assistant chief.
“It's just a great opportunity to get kids into the department and to see the police officers in a different limelight and for them to have a little bit of fun, too,” said Babkiewicz.
On Monday morning, Bluffton Mayor Larry Toomer swore both children in before the kids headed to school.
“She's getting a police escort to school. We will be bringing her lunch. Several officers will be meeting with her to discuss some very important issues.”
Her first agenda item is to authorize a candy machine at the police department, but Mila says the most important thing about her job is "to keep everybody safe."
