Senait Gebregiorgis

Reporter

Senait Gebregiorgis gladly traded in her snow boots and winter coat for sandals and sunglasses to join WESH 2 News as a reporter in July 2021. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and while she loves the city with the world's greatest skyline and pizza, it was 2019’s polar vortex that told her to run.

Prior to joining WESH, Senait was WHAS11’s lead reporter to cover the high-profile investigation into the police shooting of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. As a multi-skilled journalist, she covered everything from racial injustice protests to the coronavirus pandemic and homicides that marked the city’s deadliest year. Her work in Louisville was recognized through Kentucky Broadcasters Association, a regional Edward R. Murrow award and six Emmy nominations – two of which she won.

Senait’s roots begin in Eritrea – a country in eastern Africa. She takes pride in her rich culture and loves traveling abroad to learn about other cultures, languages and social identities. Before moving to Louisville, the self-proclaimed globetrotter spent three remarkable months traveling across Europe. Her adventures took place in Berlin, Barcelona, Budapest, London, Istanbul and Italy.

She got her start in TV News as a multimedia journalist (one-woman-band) and fill-in anchor in Central Illinois at FOX Illinois News in Champaign and Springfield. There she covered community violence, severe storms and scored exclusive interviews — including one with the family of missing University of Illinois visiting student scholar from China, Yingying Zhang. The FBI investigation into the murder kidnapping of Zhang gained national and international attention.

Senait earned her bachelor’s in Broadcast Journalism with a specialization in African American studies and political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. (I-L-L!)

She is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and strives to be a watchdog in underserved and overlooked communities by helping amplify marginalized voices. She is always up for a challenge and loves learning new things.

Senait loves spending time with family and friends, Netflixing, dancing, yoga/fitness classes, performing arts, coffee shops and trying new food — so if you have any recommendations in The City Beautiful or Central Florida, send them her way!

She is excited to learn more about her new home in the Sunshine State and loves meeting new people. Don’t hesitate to slide in her DMs with story ideas or when you see her out and about, say hello! Feel free to contact Senait at Senait.Gebregiorgis@hearst.com.
