Shan Rose is the projected winner in Orlando's District 5 special election
Shaniqua "Shan" Rose defeated Travaris McCurdy during Tuesday's Orlando District 5 special run-off election, WESH 2 has learned.
Rose secured the election after receiving 1,025 votes to McCurdy's 856, securing about 55% of the electorate.
Rose held a watch party at the District Gastrobar on Tuesday, where she was surrounded by friends and supporters.
"I'm really grateful that the voters in District 5 decided to give me a chance and they're ready for change. And we're going to work together to create the best district five," Rose said. "We're going to be able to live, work, and play here, which includes economic development, job opportunities, working together to reduce and end homelessness and address affordable housing."

Both were the top two candidates in a much wider field of people running for the seat in a special election last month.
They both got more than 23% of the vote, but not the 50% plus one needed to win the seat outright.
The race has been controversial, especially due to issues and allegations between the two candidates.
“We're still exploring our options for the things that transpired throughout this campaign. But tonight, we congratulate Ms. Rose on her victory. And we just wake up tomorrow and get back to work," McCurdy said after the unofficial results were announced.

The winner replaces long-time commissioner Regina Hill, who was suspended in April following her arrest. Hill is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a 96-year-old woman.
Hill's current term in the district ends in January 2026.
