Leesburg Police investigate homicide that left 20-year-old dead
The Leesburg Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting that left a man dead Monday afternoon.
Officers responded at 2:30 p.m. to the 2200 block of Aitkin Loop in the Overlook at Lake Griffin neighborhood in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, they located a victim lying in the front yard of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds.
"It's definitely scary," said Ashlee Brown, who lives in the neighborhood. "I'm not going to lie I didn't want my daughter to come outside today. Cause I don't know, we don't never know what's going to happen."
People we talked to in the area said at 2:30 in the afternoon, there are usually kids playing outside. This Monday, there was a murder.
"Definitely for this neighborhood that definitely doesn't happen out here," Brown said.
The shooting left 20-year-old James Jordan dead. He was shot multiple times.
"The kid that passed I talked to him a few times he was a nice kid. So this, I'm not going to lie, it threw me off. It was very random," Brown said.
Several people we talked to who were home when it happened didn't even hear the gunshots. Their first sign something was wrong?
"When the police rang my doorbell," Doris Haynes said.
They were hoping she might have something that could help.
She said police asked if her camera was working.
"I said 'I have no idea. I'm a new kid on the block. I know nothing about it,'" she said she told police.
Her home wasn't the only house that Leesburg Police visited.
"Our officers and our detective unit really went out and canvassed the area," said Sgt. Shannon Walsh with the Leesburg Police Department. "They checked every single residence that had a camera to get any type of footage they possibly could."
But police wouldn't say if they found any footage that was useful.
By Tuesday night, no arrests had been made. Something that would make this Mom in the neighborhood feel a little more at ease.
"A lot safer," Wood said. "Especially with the kids being outside."
