New Orleans data analyst says murders were down in 2023
A data analyst in New Orleans says murders were down across the city in 2023 compared to recent years.
According to Jeff Asher, a data analyst, a total of 193 people were killed in New Orleans in 2023, which is a drop from 266 people killed in 2022.
Asher crunches crime statistics for the New Orleans City Council.
It is important to note that crime surged following the coronavirus pandemic. This is why Asher says he is hesitant to credit local crime-reduction initiatives for the decrease in murder.
"It's good news couched within bad news," said Asher. "We had 200 plus murders from 2020 to 2022, so 193 is an improvement."
The years 2020 through 2022 were the nation's highest for murder rates. In 2022, there were 266 killings in New Orleans.
Asher noted that the big reason crime was down in 2023 was due to there being only five murders in December.
"That is one of the lowest counts in murders since Katrina, really," Asher said.
The reduction comes as Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick was hired by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
Kirkpatrick was approved by the council and became the first full-time female NOPD Superintendent.
Interim Michelle Woodfork led the force before Kirkpatrick was hired.
The NOPD continues to suffer with roughly 900 officers on the streets, which is a record low.
The city should ideally have 1,500 officers.
Asher says the low murder count also follows a national trend since homicides are down in most major urban cities.
According to Asher, while NOPD's response time improved last year, it is hard to find any other local metric to credit the reduction in crime to.
The last time New Orleans had fewer than 200 murders was in 2019, which was the year before the pandemic.
In 2019, the city had an almost 50-year low in murders, totaling 121.
