Mike Wankum

Meteorologist

Mike Wankum is StormTeam 5’s weeknight meteorologist and anchors weather for all WCVB Channel 5 evening and late newscasts (M-F, 4:00PM, 5:00PM, 6:00PM, 7:00PM, and 11:00PM) as well as the 10 O’Clock News on MeTV Boston.

The longest serving broadcast meteorologist in Boston, Mike joined Channel 5 in December of 2006 and has been forecasting weather in Boston for more than three decades. Prior to WCVB, Mike served 13 years as chief meteorologist at Boston’s WLVI. Before his move to Boston, he was chief meteorologist at WTVR in Richmond, Virginia as well as chief meteorologist at KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mike is an award-winning meteorologist with 17 regional NATAS Boston/New England Emmy® Awards for both weather coverage and technology reporting. He has also been recognized with numerous Associated Press and Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (MBA) awards, including a First Place MBA Sound Bites award for his weekly “Cutting Edge” technology series in 2018. In 2017 the Washington Post listed him as one of the seven “Coolest” meteorologists in the country.

Mike is a frequent guest science lecturer at area schools and universities. He’s spoken on a variety of topics including climate change, media, severe weather, nuclear disasters, and children’s issues. Mike served as past Chairman of the Chernobyl Children Project USA. He is also actively involved in various local charitable organizations.

A graduate of Briar Cliff University, Mike worked on his Masters in Atmospheric Science at Creighton University in the heart of Tornado Alley and was involved in many tornado chases in his early career.

An avid motorcycle enthusiast and licensed amateur road racer, you can often find Mike at the New Hampshire Motors Speedway where he has had many podium finishes. He also uses his racing expertise to instruct local law enforcement motorcycle officers how to ride safely at high speeds as a member of the Fishtail Riding School.

Mike is a member of the American Meteorological Society and has earned his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation. A longtime resident of Massachusetts’ South Shore, Mike enjoys spending time with his family including his three children, one grandson, and one granddaughter.
