Massachusetts man attempting Guinness World Record on bicycle for charity
A Massachusetts university student is spending the next few weeks in Oklahoma, setting off on a 1,150-mile bike journey that will see him attempt to break a Guinness World record.
Sam Westby is a Northeastern University PhD student who loves the bicycles and the outdoors.
"I am in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma right now, and I'm about to start a ride to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest GPS drawing on a bike by an individual," Westby said.
Westby is combining two things he loves: bike touring and GPS drawings.
"I've made a tree, I've made a jack o lantern. And you know what? I'm going to make the world's largest drawing done by a bicycle," Westby announced on social media earlier this month.
The journey Westby is planning to take is in the shape of a shoe.
Westby will bike from Oklahoma's biggest city through its smallest farm roads in an attempt to fundraise money for the national nonprofit "Shoes That Fit", aiming to provide 250 kids with new shoes and socks.
His goal is to raise nearly $9,000. He'll be riding entirely inside Oklahoma, a state he chose because of its warmer weather and gridded roads.
"Today is February 28th – day 0, day 1 of the trip, and then I expect it to take about 14 days," Westby said.
Westby's adventures across Massachusetts, the Northeast and the United States have attracted thousands of followers on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
He plans to vlog the entire 1,150-mile bike trip -- including #statsforthenerds -- on his social media platforms.
