In August, Governor Maura Healey declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts due to the rapidly rising number of migrant families arriving in need of shelter and services. The declaration notified the federal government that the state’s shelter system was rapidly expanding capacity in an unsustainable manner. At the time, there were nearly 5,600 families in state shelter, including children and pregnant women. Here’s how you can help these migrant families gain access to the resources that they need: Massachusetts Migrant Relief Fund The Massachusetts Migrant Relief Fund is a partnership between United Way of Massachusetts Bay and The Boston Foundation, which started to address the acute humanitarian crisis faced by migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts. The organization also supports the local community-based organizations directly serving new arrivals in our region. To help them in their efforts, you can donate here. Allston Family Welcome Center Since 1995, The Brazilian Worker Center (BWC) has supported immigrants in defending and advancing their labor and immigrant rights. In response to the increase in migrant families in Massachusetts, the BWC is acting as the Allston Family Welcome Center. By educating immigrant workers, The BWC empowers them with the knowledge and skills needed to promote economic, social, political, and racial justice for all. In addition, the organization is a Family Welcome Center, providing families with basic resources like wipes, toothbrushes and diapers. You can help them further their efforts by donating here. Quincy Family Welcome Center Founded in 1991, Bay State Community Services provides services that promote emotional and social well-being of the people and communities it serves. During this state of emergency, Bay State Community Services is acting as the Quincy Family Welcome Center, providing basic resources like formula, toothbrushes, and diapers to migrant families. You can help them reach more families by donating here.
