Celtics' star Kristaps Porzingis to undergo surgery, miss Olympics
Boston Celtics star Kristaps Porzingis requires surgery for an injury he suffered during the NBA Finals and will not be available to represent his home country in the upcoming 2024 summer Olympics, the team announced.
Porzingis suffered a torn retinaculum and dislocated posterior tibialis tendon in Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. The team has described this as a "rare" injury.
He missed Game 3 of the series because of the injury and was cleared to play a limited role in Game 4, but never took off his warmups. Porzingis returned to participate in Game 5, helping the Celtics win the game and the championship.
According to a statement issued by the Celtics on Tuesday, Porzingis had originally hoped to delay surgery until after the Olympics, where he was expected to play for Latvia, but it will now be performed in the coming days.
"The injury doesn’t allow for consistent play at the level required for Olympic competition," Celtics officials wrote.
