Meghan and Kurt Keller found love amid war; theirs was a whirlwind romance.
The two army reservists met after being called to active duty following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
"My maiden name is Kelly and Kurt's last name was Keller, and so we would stand in line alphabetically as we were checking in,” Meghan said. “That's kind of how we met, and our relationship built."
Both were sent to Iraq in 2003. Kurt proposed in the Boston Globe when their deployment ended.
"We got engaged, we bought a house, we got a dog, we got married, I got pregnant,” Meghan said. “I don't think we ever really, I guess, processed or worked on the things that we had saw and unfortunately experienced there."
Meghan said three months into her pregnancy Kurt died by suicide.
"When we came home 21 years ago, we just kind of were thrown because we were reservists. We didn't come back to a big military installation that had services and help and things like that,” Meghan said. "I really have found in my healing process is trying to take my pain and turn that into a purpose."
Meghan said she has found that purpose in supporting Heroes in Transition. Recently, she took part in an annual fundraiser for the Cape Cod organization called RUCK4HIT.
Along with a relay team, she ran through all the towns on Cape Cod, carrying a weighted rucksack.
Nicole Spencer is the executive director of Heroes in Transition which was founded 15 years ago by the parents of Captain Eric Jones, a Marine helicopter pilot who died in 2009 while supporting a combat mission in Afghanistan.
"We run 13 programs for spouses, couples, family members, veterans, active service members,” Spencer said. “We're doing a lot for the veterans and active service members on the Cape, their families, and really beyond."
