LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Police are investigating a 22-year-old mother after she allegedly put her newborn baby inside a trash bag, and left the bag inside a closet.

On July 6, officers responded to an apartment complex in the 700 block of Zorn Avenue, after calls came in reporting that a baby had been placed in a bag and hidden inside a closet. When officers arrived, they found a bag inside the closet that had what appeared to be blood and flies inside.

An arrest citation said Daira Mejia Aguilar told officers she put the baby inside the trunk of her car before they arrived. Aguilar gave birth to the baby on July 2. She told police she wrapped the baby in a blanket and then put the baby inside a trash bag and then put the bag inside the closet.

On July 7, detectives found the child inside a trash bag inside the trunk of Aguilar’s car. Aguilar was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse.

During her arraignment this morning, a not guilty plea was entered for Aguilar by the court and she was placed into home incarceration. Her next court date was set for July 16.
