Texas Rangers win 2023 World Series, first championship in franchise history

The Texas Rangers are the 2023 World Series champions, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 to take home their first championship.

The Rangers went 11-0 on the road during the playoffs, defeating the defending champion Houston Astros in seven games in the American League Championship Series. Prior to this improbable postseason run, they hadn’t been to the playoffs in seven years.

The Rangers were led by second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager, and starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who allowed zero runs in Wednesday’s start. Seager was named World Series MVP, becoming only the fourth player ever to do so multiple times. He previously won with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But the Rangers’ postseason run was defined by everyone pitching in, and under the tutelage of manager Bruce Bochy, who won three championships with the San Francisco Giants, the Texas ball club was able to bring the World Series home.

Bochy retired in 2019 before the Rangers came to him with an offer last offseason. Before his first season with the team, he famously said what his mindset was: “I’m not coming out of retirement to lose.”

“I can’t tell you what it means to the city of Arlington, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex; we’re just thrilled today,” Ray Davis, majority owner of the team, said during the celebration. “I’m a man of faith, and I’ve had to hope that we would hold up this trophy one day. We always had that vision, and we never gave up that hope, and here we are.”

It took more than 60 years since the franchise was founded, but the Rangers finally emerged from a season as the ultimate champion. They will look to follow up their success next season, chased by other favorites, such as the Astros, Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves.
