844 million

People remain without access to a basic water supply.

Some

2.3 billion

people still do not have access to basic sanitation.

At least

890 million

people still practice open defecation.

Gains made through WASH development programmes are under threat without clearly articulated strategies and sustained expenditures.

In order to support the drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector to reach the Sustainable Development Goals, an online tool “WASH BAT” or WASH Bottleneck Analysis Tool has been developed. The tool enables the development of costed and prioritized plans to remove the bottlenecks that constrains progress in the WASH sector.

Why WASH BAT?

Analyzes the complex interplay of institutional structures and processes that determine how effectively human, material and financial inputs are turned into sustainable access to drinking-water supply and sanitation. Provides a rational evidence-based approach for formulating an investment strategy for multiple sector aims of efficiency, equity and sustainability.
