MDOC escapee wearing only a sheet captured in neighborhood with help from Rankin County K-9
A Mississippi Department of Corrections escapee was captured through teamwork from law enforcement and the help of K-9 Voodoo, according to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey.
Bailey said that around 12:45 p.m. Friday, MDOC contacted the sheriff's office, reporting that they had located blood and clothing on an exterior fence at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility, and they suspected a possible escape. Bailey said MDOC confirmed the escape during an emergency headcount.
Rankin County deputies, along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Madison, Brandon and Pearl police departments responded to assist MDOC with the search. Rankin County K-9 units and the Madison Police Department's drone unit also responded.
Bailey said during the manhunt, "a vigilant citizen" called to report a seeing a suspicious man who was wearing only a sheet in her neighborhood. Officers responded and Rankin County K-9 "Voodoo" was deployed to track the suspect. Bailey said that within minutes, the police dog tracked and located the escapee in a lake near the subdivision. Bailey did not provide the specific location.
MDOC took custody of the escapee. MDOC has not released the name of the inmate.
