Editorial: No child deserves to go hungry
After a long year in school, summer is finally here. That means no more classes for a while for our children.For many parents, this time of year begins the worry of how to feed their children. Unfortunately, Mississippi is home to a staggering number of food deserts. And sadly, many cannot afford to feed their children three meals a day — some not even once a day. For them, summer is a time of struggle.No child deserves to go hungry.Despite all that, the governor rejected additional assistance from the federal government that would have provided EBT cards to eligible families. Instead, he points to other federal programs — one that school districts are taking advantage of.From Madison to Jackson to Clinton and Vicksburg-Warren, and everywhere in between, are providing summer feeding programs. And it’s not just the schools; churches and businesses are also stepping up. There’s an old African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well, we’re proud of all of our villages.
