A Welsh primary school choir had a lovely surprise while rehearsing at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay during a visit on Monday. Children from Cardiff’s Ysgol Treganna were rehearsing a song called Safwn yn y Bwlch in the Senedd building ahead of a royal performance on Thursday this week, when King Charles and Queen Camilla will themselves be visiting the Senedd to mark 25 years of devolution in Wales.

As the Year 5 and 6 pupils finished their song, applause greeted them from all around, including from above where two people had - unbeknown to the children - been watching and listening. They were First Minister Vaughan Gething and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was in the Welsh capital just three days after securing a huge majority in the general election which made him the first Labour Prime Minister since the party - led by Gordon Brown - lost the 2010 election to David Cameron’s Conservatives.

The wonderful footage was captured by Channel 4 News journalist Andy Davies, and has been shared and liked thousand of times on social media. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters e-mailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

The pupils and their teacher were made aware that somebody was looking on and were amazed when they realised it was the Prime Minister, who was keen to congratulate them on their singing and ask them a few questions. “We just walked over that bridge and heard the beautiful sounds you were making as we walked through, it was fantastic," he said.

When told the choir - who were victorious at this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod - were rehearsing before performing in front of King Charles - Mr Starmer added: “If you sing like that he’s going to absolutely love it." Mr Starmer then thanked them and members of the choir replied with “diolch” and “hwyl fawr”.

Then, once Mr Starmer had left, they all turned to each other in amazement, with some unable to hide their excitement as they jumped around having just performed for the Prime Minister.
