Our Turn - Your Turn: Crime

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - More than one out of every five people responding to a recent local survey say he or she has been a victim of crime within just the last 12 months.

That doesn't sound great, but it turns out that's best result ever since the Baton Rouge Area Foundation started doing its quality of life survey six years ago. People's opinions about all the crime-related questions in the survey were more positive.

For example, 63% of the people surveyed say they feel safe walking alone in their neighborhoods at night. That's a big improvement over the results from two years ago. The positive responses seemed to mirror statistics showing the number of violent and non-violent crimes shrinking in East Baton Rouge Parish over the past few years.

These improving results may be encouraging but the actual crime victims interviewed in this survey would remind us these numbers are far from a reason to let our guard down.

That's "Our Turn." Now, it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, visit us on Facebook or send an email to yourturn@wafb.com.
