Our Turn - Your Turn: Edmonson Retirement Legislation

This is politics at its worst.

A last-minute addition gets tacked on to a completely unrelated bill as the Louisiana legislative session comes to a close. The sneaky add-on is a provision that affects the retirement pay for just two state troopers – one of them being the head of the Louisiana State Police, Col. Mike Edmonson.

How sneaky was the move? After the fact, one of the lawmakers who sponsored the original bill says he didn't even realize what he voted for.

This is precisely the type of backroom politics that makes people so cynical about our government. What makes this even more misguided is that Col. Edmonson is well regarded at the state house and had his retirement pay change been tackled as a straight up issue, he probably would have received the exact same increase. Instead, this backroom stuff just makes everyone look bad.
