Our Turn: June 3 - Hurricane Awareness

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Many Louisiana residents did not need a special warning June 1, announcing the start of hurricane season. They got their reminder early about the havoc that weather can cause when heavy rains pelted our state causing widespread flooding. It's an early warning for all of us about the type of damage that a hurricane can cause.

The WAFB Storm Team always keeps us prepared for hurricane season they mentioned a topic in their special program this week that we want to underscore. It's an additional financial warning this year, and that is to pay close attention to your insurance coverage. Some insurance companies are changing the hurricane deductible to as much as 5% of your home's insured value. If you own a $200,000 home, that means the first $10,000 worth of damage, you have to pay for yourself. Be sure to check to see if your deductible is increasing as it may not be obvious.

Also, if you don't already have it, consider flood insurance. Losses due to flooding are not covered under typical homeowners policies, and a few people found that out the hard way last week.

That's "Our Turn." Now, it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, visit us on Facebook or send an email to yourturn@wafb.com.
