BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A 17-year-old from West Feliciana was killed in a car accident on Friday morning.

According to Louisiana State Police, the accident happened on Highway 78 just west of Highway 1 in Pointe Coupee. We’re told he ran off the road into a ditch, his car then flipped and hit a tree.

West Feliciana High School football coach Devin Decote says this is not just a loss for his team, but the entire school as well.

“We had worked out Thursday morning, finished with water balloon capture the flag and watermelon and on the way out he had a big smile on his face,” said Decote, “He came in every single day and he worked his butt off, did any job you asked him to do to the best of his ability. He put the team first and whether it was catching or receiving you knew you were going to get his best. Everyday.”

He told us he was loved on the field and off, “as he walks the halls and he’s been in the community and his families have been in his community, his mom, his dad, he’s got little brothers that are in Little League. There’s hurt in all the hallways.”

In a statement from Hollis Milton, the West Feliciana Schools Superintendent: “Rayshon was known as a well-mannered, kind student who always had a smile. Please pray for his family, friends, and our community.”

Coach Decote added, “We coach football, but we’re really talking about something way bigger than that. And they come into your life and you don’t know how long they’re gonna be there and you just try to pour into them and love them. You coach them hard. You take for granted that they are going to come in the next day.”

Coach Decote says they’ll have counseling for the football team Monday. The Superintendent also says counselors will be on hand for students or staff. They’ll just need to contact the school and make an appointment.
