Person in custody after attempted robbery, alleged sexual assault behind Gonzales grocery store
GONZALES, La. (WAFB) - The Gonzales Police Department is investigating after a man allegedly tried to rob and sexually assault a woman behind a grocery store early Friday morning, June 28.
The incident reportedly happened around 4 a.m. on West Ascension Street behind Lamendola’s Supermarket.
Police say they now have a person in custody.
According to police, a female manager at Lamendola’s arrived to let an early morning vendor into the grocery store early. Police say that after she let them in, the manager returned to her vehicle parked behind the store so she could feed some cats, as part of her regular routine, where she was then approached and assaulted by an unidentified man.
The man allegedly demanded money, and the manager threw her wallet, which was in her purse inside the vehicle, onto the ground. He then allegedly hit her and drug her on the pavement.
Police said he was interrupted by the arrival of another employee and fled on foot.
Officials described the man as being about 6-feet tall and wearing a grey hoodie sweatshirt, a face covering and gloves, a blue Dickies-style work pants, and carrying a backpack.
This is an ongoing investigation. Investigators are reportedly on scene, developing leads and canvassing the area.
