ASCENSION, La. (WAFB) - The 50-year-old Gonzales man accused of killing his wife in Ascension Parish Wednesday has been accused in three other cases involving people being seriously hurt or killed, according to records reviewed by the WAFB I-TEAM.

In the most recent case, Sean Morris is accused of shooting and killing Brenda Morris, 44, during an argument Wednesday, June 26, Ascension Parish deputies said.

A search of criminal history databases show Morris has been accused of many other serious crimes in the past.

In 1993, he was arrested for a homicide in Livingston Parish. After a trial the following year, he was found not guilty.

In 2000, Morris and a Geismar man, Marvin Jones, were both indicted for first-degree murder in the brutal shootings of Shanira Bringier and two children. The trio was abducted from Ascension Parish and taken to West Baton Rouge where they were killed. Prosecutors said two different guns were used in the killings. Jones was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. However, Morris never went to trial. Several years later, prosecutors dropped charges against him in that case.

In 2009, Morris was arrested again. This time, police in Baton Rouge charged him in the armed robbery of a restaurant. He missed several court appearances and, in 2015, he eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of simply burglary and was sentenced to four years at hard labor, with credit for time served. However, due to the “good time” rate in Louisiana state law, he was only required to serve 40 percent of his sentence and was released in May 2016, records show.

Four years later, in 2020, he was arrested again. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Department accused Morris of shooting his own son and charged him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated second-degree battery. However, prosecutors say the charges were dropped in that case after the son later changed his story, saying he has accidentally shot himself.

In his most recent case, Judge Steven Tureau set bond for Morris at $2.1 million dollars. As of 6 p.m. Thursday June 27, he remained incarcerated at the Ascension Parish jail, records showed.
