THIBODAUX, La. (WVUE) - A Thibodaux woman accused of burning and attempting to kill a 15-year-old girl pleaded not guilty on Monday, June 24.

LaTonya Harris, 40, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, cruelty to a juvenile, and child endangerment in Terrebonne Parish.

The investigation began after Harris and her fiance, Terrence Washington, 41, were involved in a car crash in Texas in April. Police discovered the girl in the car, severely burned, shot, and “clinging to life.”

Washington reportedly admitted to authorities that Harris burned the girl after he had sexually abused her in February.

Harris remains in custody on a $1 million bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 23. Trial is set to begin on Oct. 14.
