BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - St. Michael High School is constructing a brand-new football field to be located in the rear of the school grounds. The Warriors are similarly continuing to renovate their program’s philosophy. Zachary Leger’s team broke out last season with a 7-2 regular season followed by the school’s first-ever playoff win. Now, the challenge is taking things a step further.

“We’re here to prove we’re a perennial power,” Leger said.

St. Michael returns several impact players that can help with that mission including John Martinez. The rising senior ran for over 1,000 yards last season in an honorable mention all-state campaign.

“John’s been in that role for two seasons...couldn’t ask for a better leader,” Leger said.

The Warriors also add McKinley transfer running back Deontae Camel who was a key cog in the Panthers offense in 2023. The rising sophomore brings a lot of speed and athleticism to the table.

St. Michael has to replace Preston Sentino who commanded the charge at quarterback last year. The Warriors are confident in rising senior Brock Hamilton to nab the starting gig while a few other guys provide depth and can factor into certain packages.

The Warriors are strong at linebacker and in the secondary this year and the defensive staff plans to change the scheme a bit with more two-high safety looks with even more blitzing.

St. Michael opens its 2024 season on September 6th against cross-town foe Episcopal.
