AMITE, La. (WVUE) - Friends, family, and loved ones gathered in Hammond on Thursday (June 20) to say their goodbyes to Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter.

Brunett was found brutally stabbed to death in her trailer in Loranger one week ago. Police launched a regionwide search for her two daughters and tracked them down in Jackson, Mississippi.

The body of Callie’s 4-year-old daughter, Erin, was found in the woods. Her six-year-old sister was found alive, but injured in a nearby car. Two suspects are now charged with multiple crimes including first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Many people in Loranger have found it hard to speak about what was done to Callie Brunett and her two daughters. In the absence of words, they could only show their emotion.

On Thursday afternoon, Brunett’s family and the broader community of their hometown of Loranger, gathered at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond to say their final goodbye to the 35-year-old mother and her little daughter, Erin.

Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter were alive for a combined 39 years. The way their lives were taken goes against many people’s common belief that parents should never have to bury their kids and that women children should never be harmed.

Following the funeral, a pair of hearses carried the bodies of Callie and Erin Brunett to their final resting place. A solemn send-off, that many say came far too soon.

A GoFundMe “in loving support of the Brunett family in a time of unimaginable suffering,” received over $53,000 in donations as of Thursday morning.

A Tangipahoa Parish grand jury indicted two suspected killers on first-degree murder charges, punishable by life in prison or death.
