BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The Southern Lab Kittens are coming off a state championship in 2023, defeating Riverside Academy 42-35 to win the Division IV select title.

Southern Lab head coach Darrell Asberry is now entering his seventh year leading the Kittens and says the standard of the program is to either reach the Superdome “or have an average season”. Asberry says Lab loses 21 players off of last year’s team, including 18 starters.

However, the Kittens are excited about many of the new starters beginning to emerge, including quarterback Jerry Bottley, who has served as the backup the last two seasons. Southern Lab’s receiving corps returns, while Asberry says the Kittens will likewise have experience and talent on the defensive line as well.

As usual the school will play a challenging non-district slate, which will include opponents like Madison Prep and 5A program Denham Springs.
