BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - It’s a parade fit for champions and fans showed their support.

The LSU gymnastics team had a parade and celebration Wednesday evening in honor of their national championship win.

“We were in tears. I cried. I cried, " said mother and daughter Dana and Lizzie Street.

They were just a couple of the many fans who showed love to the team after they won the program’s first ever national championship giving a boost to women’s sports.

“I really feel like women’s sports is having a moment. Gymnastics is really coming through. The women’s basketball team like I mentioned earlier coming through,” said LSU fan Steven Probst.

Fans outside the PMAC took pictures in front of a replica of the national championship trophy, but inside was a fiery celebration.

“It’s something we’ve worked so hard for and just everybody who came before us that paved the way for us to get the opportunity to do what we’re doing. It takes a village and everybody and all of you people watching at home, just seriously, thank you,” said LSU gymnast Haleigh Bryant.

Legendary LSU gymnastic coach D-D Breaux’s words hit the hardest.

“D-D used to always say, if you hang around the goal long enough, you score. Well, we scored,” said LSU gymnastics coach Jay Clark.

Wise words for future LSU gymnasts.

“I want that to be me one day. That’s what I’m hoping for,” said 8-year-old gymnast Mary Grace Mickenheim.
