CYPREMORT POINT, La. (WAFB) - A south Louisiana state park has added its first-ever campground, along with a number of other improvements. You can now take the camper and spend a few days catching saltwater fish from the shoreline at Cypremort Point.

The shoreline of Vermilion Bay is the end of the road when you drive due south from New Iberia. It’s also the location of Cypremort Point State Park. And it’s clear why so many visitors come here. It’s all about the fishing. This is a place where you can catch Louisiana’s popular salt saltwater fish without leaving the shoreline.

Waylon King, a park manager, says there no need to have a boat when you come out here to fish.

“You could fish along the coastline. You could also crab as well,” said King.

Brad Wonderling says he’s new to salt water fishing, but he’ll be at Cypremort Point for the rest of the year as the campground host.

“We’ve had people driving through every day asking when we’re gonna open. So they’re ready out here. They’re ready for a new park,” said Wonderling.

Cypremort Point just added its first campground, 22 paved spaces with complete hookups for RVs.

“It’s beautiful. The RV sites are perfect, brand spanking new. Everyone’s got a view of the beach. The sunset sunsets are incredible here, so that’s been the best part,” said Wonderling.

The park also has a new quarter mile long boardwalk through a wetland area. It’s a place for relaxing and looking for wildlife.

King says you will see beaves, nutria, river otters, white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, mink, and even a few alligators.

But the main attraction here is the fish. And you can hook a big one.

Daron Clement, a park visitor from Breaux Bridge, is reeling in a bull redfish. He says he lost one he hooked a short time earlier. This fish is a keeper. You need to get a bigger ice chest for starters.

Clement says fishing is pretty efficient here.

“With the cast net, I could catch a pretty good amount of bait as well, so it’s all good,” said Clement.

The fishing areas are now concrete, replacing a hurricane damaged wooden pier. Just more of the improvements at Cypremort Point. A state park that is now primed for camping, exploring the marsh and fishing.
