BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - There’s a diamond sitting in the rough out in Donaldsonville, Louisiana right now and his name is Chad Elzy Jr. The rising senior running back has gone criminally underrated to this point in his recruitment and it’s difficult to pinpoint a reason as to why that’s the case. The Ascension Catholic running back is an extremely hard worker, excellent in the classroom, and even tied an LHSAA record last season on the football field just to give you a sense of his prowess on the gridiron.

In the Regional Round of the Division four select LHSAA Football playoffs, Elzy scampered for nine touchdowns against Opelousas Catholic in a 77-43 win. The Bulldog star earned our Sportsline Player of the Week Award for the second time in the 2023 season with the performance and helped his Ascension Catholic squad advance to the quarterfinals.

“I was pretty shocked at myself and very proud of myself to do something that most high school players haven’t done and that just meant a lot,” Elzy said.

The nine touchdown output tied an LHSAA record and Elzy’s final yardage numbers were 27 carries for 461 yards, and keep in mind this is in one singular football game.

Elzy only owns one offer at this point from Graceland but he said there are other colleges interested in him such as Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Arkansas State. Perhaps another big season and even more attention will put enough pressure on recruiters to extend the offers that Chad very well deserves.

“Trying to get as many eyes as possible and show out to be the best player I can be,” Elzy said.

Chad also mentioned his excitement to play Dunham and Episcopal in the fall and try to make a run to the Dome in his final season of high school football. Check out the full interview above or on our WAFB Youtube page.
