The trooper was driving to the scene in Port Allen on Tuesday, March 13 when he noticed a damaged 2015 Jeep Cherokee parked in front of a home not far from the scene.

Once on the scene along Lafiton Lane (LA 987-3), investigators say they found pieces of a Jeep scattered near the body of 37-year-old Theresa Weems of Port Allen, who was found dead in a ditch.

The trooper returned to the home where he spotted the Jeep and said he found 30-year-old Austin Kelley of Port Allen trying to make repairs to the vehicle. Kelley was charged with felony hit-and-run involving death.

It is believed that the victim, who lived just down the street, was walking home around midnight the prior evening when she was hit.

Kelley was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail. Wednesday afternoon, jail records showed he remained in jail on a $35,000 bond.

Felony hit-and-run is not a charge allowing police to release a mug shot to the media. Therefore, none was released in this case.
