Southern men’s and women’s basketball knock off FAMU on Senior Night
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - There was a sweet smell of victory on the Bluff Monday night.
Not only was it Senior Night, but both the Southern University Jaguars men’s and women’s basketball teams defeated the Florida A&M University Rattlers inside the Mini Dome.
The Lady Jaguars knocked off the Lady Rattlers with a final score of 67-61.
Southern celebrated nine seniors and was led by fifth-year senior Taylor Williams, who had a game-high of 23 points.
According to Southern Jaguars Athletics, the Rattlers outscored the Jaguars 20-15 to take a five-point lead after the first ten minutes of the contest, 20-15.
The Jaguars closed out the half by outscoring the Rattlers 19-13 in the second quarter to give the Jaguars a one-point lead to end the first half, 34-33.
The Rattlers outscored the Jags 19-15 in the third quarter to take a three-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 52-49.
The Jaguars fought back, outscoring the Rattlers 18-9 to pick their second win in a row and knocking off FAMU.
Southern returns to action Thursday, March 7 when they travel to Alabama State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff
The men’s team picked up where the women left off, punishing the Rattlers with a final score of 58-44.
Five seniors on the men’s team were honored before their last game in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Southern’s biggest first-half lead was by nine points.
By halftime, the score was 26-23.
The men sealed the deal in the second half and got the win with a final score of 58-44. It was a senior day sweep for Southern Hoops.
The Jags return to action Thursday, March 7 when they travel to Alabama State for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff
