2023 Sportsline Player of the Year announced

The 2023 Sportsline Player of the Year has been announced.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Catholic High School Quarterback Daniel Beale has been named the 2023 Sportsline Player of the Year.

The award honors excellence in high school football in Louisiana.

Perhaps the most decorated player and quarterback in the storied history of Catholic High Football, Daniel Beale leaves CHS after a four-year stint as the Bears starting signal caller. Three of those four seasons ended with a state championship. The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajun cemented his legacy as one of the best to ever dawn the Black and Orange at Catholic High.

Sportsline Player of the Year Finalist: Harry Beacham - U High LB

No linebacker in the history of U High Football has racked up more tackles than Harry Beacham. The Navy Football signee capped off an excellent career with the Cubs that included many stops, tackles for loss, and a state championship.

Sportsline Player of the Year Finalist: Damon Blocker - Central High RB

In one of the craziest one-year turnarounds you’ll ever find, Damon Blocker transcends from a little-known receiver for a struggling Central High Football team, to an all-state running back on a championship contending Wildcats squad. Blocker overcame a broken tibia and fibula he suffered in October of 2022 and returned to the field to embark on the best season of his wild football journey

A linebacker with a fitting name considering he seems to be fired out of a cannon on every play. People in St. Charles became accustomed to this name in the second level of the defense. Cannon was a stalwart for the Comets defense and was a critical piece in several runs to the state championship game.

A player that’s already enrolled and begun his collegiate career with the University of Miami (FL). Dylan Day was the quarterback of a respected Southern Lab defense. The safety was the vocal leader in the back end and had a knack for making the big play, like when he house called a pick six to vault the Kittens to the state title game in 2023. Day a crucial component in the success of the Southern Lab football program in recent years.

A player that doesn’t have a lot to say but does the talking with his pads. Braeden George first caught the attention of his coaches when he scored a pick-six in a comeback win against Ascension Catholic in 2022. The Navy signee was named Sportsline Player of the Week for that effort two years ago. Now he’s a finalist, a rewarding honor after several years of hard work and dedication to improvement.

Carter Hanberry had his “One Shining Moment” of sorts for the entirety of Dutchtown’s magical state playoff run. The Griffins advancing the furthest into the postseason bracket in school history. A heart-breaking 31-28 loss at Zachary was the only decision standing in the way of D-Town reaching the state title game. Hanberry fueled a lot of the success along with a stingy Dutchtown defense. The Southeastern Louisiana LB commit a two-way star with some moxy as a wildcat quarterback.

Sportsline Player of the Year Finalist: Joel Rogers - West Feliciana ATH

A name LSU fans should learn now, Joel Rogers. The projected safety with the Tigers played every position for West Fel, minus offensive line although he could probably hold his own there as well. Week after week, Rogers fought through little injuries and cramps to lead his team to victories and a respectable season.

An electric player for the Wildcats, Brayden Williams will make your jaw drop with some of the plays he makes on an average Friday night in the Bayou. The dual-threat quarterback creating highlights with both his arm and legs. The St. James community embraced its explosive playmaker and the love is mutual. Williams and St. James falling just short in the state championship game this past year, but an amazing career no less for the all-state performer.
