Southern women’s and men’s basketball defeat Miss. Valley on the Bluff

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The Southern Jaguars knocked off Mississippi Valley State University inside of the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Both the women’s and men’s squads came out on top.

Southern’s women’s basketball team defeated the Lady Delta Devils 64-45.

According to Southern Jaguars Athletics, the Jags outscored the Lady Delta Devils 14-6 to end the first quarter and take an eight-point lead after the first ten minutes of the game.

Despite outscoring the Jaguars 16-9 in the second quarter, Mississippi Valey State still trailed the Jags by one point at the end of the first half, making the score 23-22.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 19-0 run to begin the second half to blow the contest wide open to end the third quarter with a 14-point lead, 44-30. 

Southern outscored the Lady Delta Devils 20-15 in the fourth quarter to get the win, knocking off Mississippi Valley by 19 points with a final score of 64-45.

The Lady Jags will travel to Alcorn State on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.

That momentum continued as the men’s basketball team also played host to Mississippi Valley State University.

Southern legend Avery Johnson was in attendance to watch the Jags in action.

The men’s team scored the first 16 points of the game. Southern led 46-26 at the half before sealing the deal and finishing with a score of 78-54.

Southern’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3 as they travel to Alcorn State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
