I was ten years old when our neighbor hung a banner for the Love Party from his window. I thought it was beautiful. In 1994, when I went to live in California and I saw scandalized police officers issue tickets to friends of mine who were tanning naked on the beaches, I thought of Cicciolina and how indignant she would be. How come in Malibu you couldn’t even untie your bathing suit? It was, in fact, a Californian who addressed this question. Her name is Lina Esco and she is a director, actor, and political activist. She was the first in the world of show business to question the public nudity laws in the United States with her film Free the Nipple (released in 2014). Thanks to help from models and celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne and Willow Smith, Lina Esco’s movie went from being a little-known film to the symbol of a broad movement. So much so that today on Instagram there are more than three million posts with the hashtag #freethenipple. The issue, supported by the American post-feminist movement, seems to fit within a larger anti-censorship revolution that advocates a return to the real, natural body.
