A travel photographer, creator of the Discover and Escape agency and creative editor of the famous Mr and Mrs Smith website, Louis A.W. Sheridan is a globetrotter with a sharp eye. Vogue took the opportunity to ask him about his favorite hotels around the world, from Rajasthan to Tuscany via Patagonia.
Jawai, Rajasthan, India
An other-worldly experience somewhere in the wilds between Jodhpur and Udaipur. Leopards
live peacefully alongside local villagers and the granite beneath your feet is a billion years old.
The Other Side, Eleuthera, Bahamas
Bahamian beaching without distraction. A short boat-ride from another favourite, Harbour
Island, The Other Side is a pared-back collection of design-led tents and huts that look out
over a white sand beach.
Zaborin, Niseko, Japan
One of my first onsen experiences, it will be hard to beat. In the wilds of Hokkaido and at the
base of Mount Yōtei, Zaborin has just 15 rooms, each with an onsen bath filled with piping hot
volcanic water.
The Lanesborough, London, United Kingdom
My go-to staycation for a dose of royal spoiling, complete with butler. Everything a grand Dame
should be and more, people-watching in the Library Bar is unsurpassed.
Château du Grand-Lucé, Loire Valley, France
An 18th-century château in the Loire Valley with perhaps my favourite pool – carved into the
footprint of an ancient fountain on the parterre.
Raes on Wategos, Byron Bay, Australia
With panoramic views of Wategos Beach, bright breezy interiors, and a revolving cast of “sea
and be seen” characters, Raes is everything you want in an Aussie boutique hotel.
Six Senses Punakha, Punakha, Bhoutan
Bhutan itself is steeped in thrilling mystery, and this place only serves to heighten the feeling.
Set between a dense forest and jagged peaks, enchantment comes as standard.
Awasi Patagonia, Patagonia, Chile
This is a chance to play Gaucho for a while – albeit with an extravagant lodge to retire to each
night. Riding across the Patagonian steppe on horseback while tracking puma is the most
singular of experiences.
The Bowery, New York, United States
The Bowery is my home from home in NYC. Old-world service and style, with sweeping views
out across Scorsese territory.
Aman Kyoto, Kyoto, Japan
Set in an ancient garden on the northern edge of Kyoto, this place is a masterclass in working
with nature rather than against it.
Borgo Santo Pietro, Tuscany, Italy
A Tuscan village turned top-tier hotel that’s backed by a biodynamic farm. There’s nothing of
note for miles around, which makes for guilt-free switching off.
The Dutchess, Upstate New York, United States
A somewhat secretive Upstate hideaway. Perfect for a gregarious weekend retreat. It’s truly
farm-to-table in approach, and tastes as good as it looks.
