If you hadn’t heard, ’tis the season of the loafer, from polished penny loafers to chunky lug-soles. These days, however, the loafers on everyone’s–and we mean everyone’s–lips are the classically-cool driving loafer. The trend first caught our attention back in October at the Miu Miu spring 2024 runway collection, when models made their way down the catwalk in preppy pairs of leather loafers reminiscent of the traditional boat shoe. From there, slightly softer and less-structured styles have emerged from several of our other favorite labels, like The Row, Proenza Schouler, Khaite, and Tod’s. Just last week outside the European men’s shows, women’s driving loafers were on full display, sported by the ever fashionable street style scene. One thing’s for sure: the women’s driving loafer is about to take our shopping carts (and hopefully yours, too) by serious storm!

Vogue’s Ultimate Driving Loafer Wish List:

Now back to the topic at hand: While options in classic black are to be expected, like the below from Coach, Dear Frances, and Aquatalia, bright white varieties from Prada, Massimo Dutti, and Bally are especially fitting for spring’s much-anticipated arrival. Not to mention that for right now, the latter completes any all-white winter outfit formula to monochromatic perfection. Then, there are sumptuous chocolate brown styles that range in textures–think sultry suede pairs from Tod’s and M.Gemi to luxe leather moccasins from The Row and Minnetonka. For a slightly more modern interpretation, driving loafers from A.Emery to Proenza Schouler feature a slipper-like heel for easy yet elegant dressing.

Styling-wise, we recommend wearing your new statement shoes with everything from great pairs of lived-in denim and notable knits to tailored trousers and outstanding outerwear. Below, the new sleek loafer trend that’ll have you stepping into spring (or any season for that matter) in total style.
