Margot Robbie has been cast as memorable femme fatale blondes before, in The Wolf of Wall Street and Focus, but today’s new trailer for Suicide Squad reveals the unlikely hero Harley Quinn as her most influential on-screen transformation yet. Robbie’s pristine porcelain complexion is color-matched with double-processed blonde hair tied up into schoolgirl pigtails of bouncy curls. Then things go wonderfully awry. The ponytails are dip-dyed in cotton-candy colors, her eyeliner is smudged, her red lipstick is smeared, and her eyeshadow is mismatched (coordinated to mirror the respective pink and blue pigtails).
As she happily sips espresso and swings a bat to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” she becomes the most captivating character in the ensemble cast. After all, this is a woman who wears her heart not on her sleeve, but on her face. While we might not be ready to start painting multiple pastel pigments on our faces in a single day, we will remember, thanks to Harley, that there is beauty in contrast.
